Federal officials have received at least five reports of incidents involving expelled hot food or liquid, including four cases with severe second-degree burns.
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging consumers to immediately stop using certain Gourmia pressure cookers after multiple reports of severe burn injuries linked to the appliances.
In a warning issued Tuesday, the agency said the six-quart digital pressure cookers can open while still pressurized, allowing hot contents to spray out and cause serious burns.
The commission said it has received five reports of incidents involving expelled hot food or liquid, including four cases with severe second-degree burns.
Multiple serious safety issues
The agency cited three primary safety concerns:
Lid failure: The lid can open while the cooker remains pressurized, creating a risk of hot contents ejecting.
Hard-to-see float valve: The pressure indicator is located inside the handle, making it difficult for users to determine whether pressure remains in the unit.
Incorrect volume markings: Inaccurate fill lines on the inner pot may lead consumers to overfill the cooker, increasing the risk of hot food or liquid being expelled during venting or opening.
How to tell if your pressure cooker is included
The warning applies to Gourmia six-quart digital pressure cookers, model GPC625, finished in stainless steel and black plastic with a digital display and push-button controls.
About 43,500 units were sold between 2017 and 2020 for roughly $50 to $80 at Best Buy, other retailers and online marketplaces.
The cookers were imported by Steelstone Group, doing business as Gourmia, of Brooklyn, New York, and manufactured in China.
According to the commission, the importer and Best Buy have declined to agree to an acceptable recall to address the hazard. The agency said at least two lawsuits have been filed by consumers alleging burn injuries.
What consumers should do
The CPSC said owners should stop using the pressure cookers immediately and dispose of them. Consumers are advised not to sell or give away the products because of the risk of injury.
