The water jugs, sold by Michigan-based supermarket chain Meijer, were originally recalled in November, but contaminated water could be sitting in customers’ homes.
WASHINGTON — More than 38,000 gallons of bottled water sold at the supermarket chain Meijer are under recall after a black substance was found floating inside some of the containers, according to a recent enforcement report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The Michigan-based supermarket and grocery chain said the recall involves 38,043 gallons of its 1-gallon steam-distilled water sold in six states.
According to Meijer, the recalled water was sold in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.
The products were pulled from shelves after the company identified a “floating black foreign substance in the product,” the FDA report said.
Meijer initiated the recall on Nov. 13, but because bottled water is shelf-stable, it is possible that some of the contaminated bottles were sold and are now in customers’ homes.
The water was sold in plastic gallon jugs with red plastic lids and distributed across six Midwestern states.
The recalled bottles contain 128 fluid ounces (1 gallon or 3.78 liters) of steam-distilled water. Consumers can identify the affected products by the following information printed on the bottle:
The FDA enforcement report did not indicate whether any illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled product. Meijer has not publicly disclosed what the black substance is or how it entered the bottles.
Customers who purchased the affected water are advised not to consume it and to return it to where they bought it for a full refund.
