After severe storms moved through North Texas Saturday, damage can look similar—but tornadoes and straight-line winds leave behind different clues.
In the aftermath of severe weather, it’s common to assume the worst damage came from a tornado—but straight-line winds can be just as destructive.
In North Texas, the April 25 storms did produce confirmed tornadoes, including an EF-2 in Wise County near Runaway Bay with peak winds around 135 mph, and an EF-1 near Springtown with winds near 105 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Tornadic winds rotate and typically leave behind a narrow, concentrated path of damage, often with debris scattered in multiple directions. In contrast, straight-line winds—produced by strong thunderstorms or downbursts—move in one direction, causing more widespread, uniform damage, with trees and debris all pushed the same way.
While tornadoes are rated on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, straight-line winds in this same system still approached 80 mph, strong enough to cause damage that can resemble a weak tornado.
No matter the cause, both types of wind are dangerous and require quick action.
The safest place during a tornado or severe storm is indoors, in an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows. Avoid large open spaces, and never try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle.
It’s also critical to have multiple ways to receive warnings—especially overnight—since these storms struck late in the evening as a supercell moved through the region.
In storm-prone areas like North Texas, severe weather can escalate quickly, so preparation and awareness are key to staying safe.
