The four astronauts on the Artemis II mission will be wearing high-tech, high-visibility flight suits.

WASHINGTON — The technology that goes into designing and manufacturing the clothes astronauts wear during missions is cutting-edge, with safety as priority. Every seam, stitch, zip, pocket and gadget is expertly planned out and has a purpose. But why is it bright orange?

There are several reasons, but it all really comes back to safety.

The color, sometimes called “international orange,” is a vivid and intense reddish-orange hue that is often used in aerospace and marine industries because it’s highly visible. The Golden Gate Bridge is painted with a similar color, making it stand out against the bay fog.

The orange spacesuits that will be worn by the Artemis II team are called the Orion Crew Survival System, or OCSS. It’s meant to be worn during launch and entry and has been “enhanced from head to toe with improvements to the suit worn on shuttle missions,” according to NASA.

It might sound like science fiction, but the suits are even designed to keep astronauts alive for up to six days, even if the Orion were to lose cabin pressure while in space.

They’re also equipped with survival gear during the return-to-Earth ocean splashdown.

“Each suit will carry its own life preserver that contains a personal locator beacon, a rescue knife, and a signaling kit with a mirror, strobe light, flashlight, whistle, and light sticks,” according to NASA.

Which brings us back to the color choice.

The high-visibility orange suits are easy to spot and the fluorescent hue is rare in the natural world. Mariners have been using the color for generations because it stands out against the dark ocean and other natural landscapes. When there’s a search-and-rescue effort, time is of the essence, so a color that’s easy to see is a preferred choice.

The suits are bold in color, but it’s a color that’s now associated with bold and high-risk explorations into the great unknowns that challenge our understanding of the Earth and beyond.
