WASHINGTON — The Opening Ceremony will mark the official start of the Milan Cortina Winter Games on Friday.
Although some competitions, such as qualifiers and tournament matches, began days earlier, the celebratory Opening Ceremony will officially kick off the Games. For the first time ever at a Winter Games, two Olympic cauldrons will be lit at the same time, one in Milan and one in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The main event, with its pomp and pageantry, will be held at Milan’s San Siro Olympic Stadium, one of Italy’s most iconic sporting venues. The Opening Ceremony is especially significant, as it will likely be the last major global event held at the stadium before it is torn down in the next few years.
Additional moments during the Opening Ceremony will also be held simultaneously in other Olympic regions, including Cortina d’Ampezzo, Predazzo, and Livigno.

The 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony is on Friday, Feb. 6.
What time does the Olympics Opening Ceremony start in the U.S.?
The Opening Ceremony officially begins at 8 p.m. local time in Italy. In the U.S., that means the party will start at 2 p.m. ET, 1 p.m. CT, noon MT and 11 a.m. PT.
Key moments of the ceremony include the Parade of Athletes, in which athletes enter the stadium in delegations, and the lighting of the Olympic cauldrons. In line with Olympic protocol, the Parade begins with Greece and concludes with Italy, the host country, following the alphabetical order of the delegations in Italian.
More than 1,300 people are involved in the Opening Ceremony festivities across all Olympic locations. This includes performers, volunteers and technical staff from more than 27 countries.
About 60,000 people are expected to attend the Opening Ceremony, including a U.S. delegation led by Vice President JD Vance. Millions of viewers worldwide will be watching on television.
Who is performing at the Opening Ceremony?
The Opening Ceremony for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics will feature plenty of talented performers — including one of the United States’ most famous pop stars.
Grammy-winning artist Mariah Carey will perform alongside Italian icon Andrea Bocelli at the Milan Cortina Opening Ceremony.
Additionally, viewers can expect to see Sabrina Impacciatore, known for her role in “White Lotus,” and Chinese pianist Lang Lang. Global superstar Laura Pausini will also perform at the ceremony Friday.
How long is the Opening Ceremony?
For an Opening Ceremony dubbing itself as “most spread-out,” expect the celebrations to go long.
“The philosophy and ceremonial aspects which surround the Olympic Games distinguish them from all other international sports events,” the Olympics’ official page reads. “Through music, song, dance and fireworks, the opening and closing ceremonies invite people to discover the culture of the country in which the Games are taking place. “
The ceremony usually takes about three hours, though in 2021 the Tokyo Games took about four hours.
