ATLANTA — Zoo Atlanta has a new resident with remarkable climbing skills.

The zoo announced that Boon, an 8-year-old female clouded leopard, arrived on April 14, 2026, from Nashville Zoo at Grassmere. Her move was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, a program that helps manage and protect animal populations in accredited zoos.

Boon is not yet visible to visitors. She will spend about a month behind the scenes completing a routine quarantine before exploring her new habitat in the zoo’s Complex Carnivores area.

Clouded leopards may share a name with leopards, but they are actually part of their own genus, Neofelis. The mid-sized cats usually weigh between 25 and 51 pounds.

They are known for unique traits that help them move through forest canopies with ease, including:

  • One of the longest tails relative to body size among wild cats, helping with balance
  • Rotating ankle joints that allow them to climb down trees headfirst
  • Strong limbs and large paws suited for gripping branches

These skills make clouded leopards some of the most agile climbers in the cat family.

Clouded leopards, considered by experts to be a vulnerable species, live in forests across parts of Asia, including the Himalayan foothills, northern India, Bhutan, Southeast Asia and southern China.
