The lobster’s rare coloring saved it from becoming dinner, according to the Wellfleet Shellfish Co.
WASHINGTON — A fishing vessel off Cape Cod made a 1-in-50 million catch last week when it came back with a rare split-color lobster.
The vessel Timothy Michael hauled in the lobster on Thursday, the Wellfleet Shellfish Co. posted to social media, adding that the creature’s unique coloring is what saved it from the dinner table.
“Instead of heading to market, she’s heading somewhere even more special,” the company said.
Wellfleet Shellfish donated the lobster to Woods Hole Science Aquarium in Falmouth, Massachusetts, where the company said she’ll eventually be put on publish display. The aquarium, which is run by the National Marine Fisheries Service, is currently closed for repairs and renovations and will reopen in 2027.
For now, the lobster is in the care of the Marine Biological Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Woods Hole, according to Wellfleet Shellfish.
“Split lobsters like this are extraordinarily rare — caused by unique genetic variations that create their striking half-and-half coloring,” the company said on social media. “Moments like this are why we do what we do: supporting our fishing community, protecting the ocean, and sharing its wonders with everyone.”
