MARIETTA, Ga. — Nineteen dogs rescued from devastating wildfires in South Georgia arrived safely in metro Atlanta on Thursday, where they are now beginning the road to recovery after their shelter burned to the ground.
The dogs were transported to the Humane Society’s crisis response center in Marietta after a five-hour drive north. Staff members immediately began evaluating their health and providing care following the animals’ traumatic experience.
The arrival was loud and emotional, with barking filling the air as handlers carefully unloaded crates and guided the dogs inside. Many appeared tired, dirty and shaken, though most did not show visible injuries.
“Our Operation Humane team went to Blackshear, Georgia, last night to bring back 19 dogs, responding to the wildfires that have been happening in south Georgia,” said Caroline Parks, a communications specialist with the Humane Society.
One by one, the dogs were led into the facility, where staff assessed their condition and provided food, water and a safe place to rest. Some appeared nervous, while others were visibly exhausted after being surrounded by flames just hours earlier.
“Thankfully, most of them don’t have any visible wounds, but that’s why they came here to our crisis response center,” Parks said. “We can see if they need any medical attention, and they’re going to recover here from the traumatic experience that they just had.”
For many of the animals, the center marks their first moment of calm since the fires broke out. Staff members said the focus is now on stabilization and recovery.
“They’ll go through their intake process, any veterinary needs or medical care that they need,” Parks said. “This is really just a space for them to be safe and have an environment to recover from what they just went through.”
Parks emphasized the importance of rapid response during disasters, noting the need for resources to protect animals across the state.
“People don’t realize how big of a deal it is,” she said. “When it happens, the most important part is action. It’s really important for animals all across the state of Georgia to have the resources they need when disaster strikes.”
The dogs will remain at the crisis center until they are medically cleared. After that, they will be made available for adoption.
Humane Society staff said they are prepared to return to south Georgia for additional rescues if the wildfires continue.
