Mr. Clemmie Adams has dedicated more than five decades to the city of Jackson, and he has no plans to slow down.

In the City of Jackson, one man’s dedication is evident in every corner.

Mr. Clemmie Adams just turned 90 years old. After 54 years with the city, he still shows up every day, ready to do the job right.

“On the weekend, I like to come by and see if it looks good, if the paper is picked up, it looks nice to me,” he says, keeping an eye on Jackson Square.

“My job is important to me. When I wake up in the morning, I get up, looking forward to coming to work and do my job,” Mr. Clemmie adds.

Mayor Carlos Duffey says Mr. Clemmie’s work ethic is unmatched.

“Just showing up every day to do the job and giving a great effort,” he says. “Understanding the value of commitment, you’re hired to do a thing, and you do it to the best of your ability. And just that commitment to excellence. He is committed to that place of excellence. If you walk around that square, you’ll see it. His handprints are all over the cleanliness of our city.”

Mr. Clemmie started with the city on March 1, 1972. “You think about that, that’s the year before I was born. So the year before I was born, he started working at the city of Jackson,” Duffey said.

Over the years, Mr. Clemmie has held many jobs, and he is currently a custodian. He has taken pride in each one. “A job is what you make out of it. You can make ’em good, you can make ’em bad, and I always try to make mine good,” he says.

Even at 90, he has no plans to retire. “I would get lonely if I didn’t come to work,” he says. “Well, we get along good, and people like me good.”

The mayor says Mr. Clemmie could stay as long as he wants. “When I was elected four years ago, he said, ‘Please don’t get rid of me,’ and I said, ‘Oh, I am not jumping on that sword. You’ll be here as long as you want to work for the city of Jackson.’ “

The mayor describes Mr. Clemmie as a local legend.

“It’s just amazing that at 90, he’s still getting around, still committed to work, still committed to the city after all of these years and wanting to be here. Just showing up every day to do the job and giving a great effort,” he says.

Mr. Clemmie says the secret is simple:

“A job is what you make out of it. You can make ’em good, you can make ’em bad, and I always try to make mine good. My job is important to me. When I wake up in the morning, I get up, looking forward to coming to work and do my job.”

For Mr. Clemmie, work is more than a responsibility; it’s a way of life.

“Jackson’s been my town all my life. I love it,” he says.

For the city, his dedication is more than just cleaning streets; it’s a symbol of pride, commitment, and a lifetime of service.
