ATLANTA– JULY 21, 2022 – LIVE from Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot, Univision’s “Premios Juventud” (PJ) thrilled audiences with the best of Latin music, summer’s hottest hits, exciting collaborations, and memorable premieres. Under the theme “Celebra Tu Pasión” (Celebrate Your Passion), this year’s edition showcased the passion and influence of Hispanic youth, and made history with the announcement of the first-ever “Agent of Change” grant established to recognize individuals or entities who are committed to driving positive change in the community, and the world. This first grant, presented by worldwide star and entrepreneur J Balvin, will pledge $25,000 to an individual or organization making strides in mental health and wellness.
The four-hour celebration began with the return of the popular pre-show “Noche de Estrellas,” followed by the main event. The highly-anticipated night kicked off with a historic performance by Daddy Yankee. The global superstar shook the “PJ” stage with his mega hit “Rumbatón” in an unforgettable final TV performance ahead of his farewell tour “La Última Vuelta” later this summer. Fans were then captivated by the beloved Mexican regional band Grupo Firme who performed their latest hits “El Tóxico,” “En Tu Perra Vida,” and “Ya Supérame.”
Some top musical moments of the night included a show-stopping performance by the new generation of Tropical artists who came together under the direction of salsa master Sergio George, to perform El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico’s legendary hits “Que Le Ponga Salsa,” “No Hay Cama Pa Tanta Gente,” and “La Fiesta de Pilito.” Among the artists performing were Dominican singer Manny Cruz who presented his song “Santo Domingo,” Latin pop sensation Luis Figueroa who delighted fans with his song “Vienes,” queen of urban salsa Yahaira Plasencia who made her “PJ” debut with “La Cantante,” charismatic salsa singer Michael Stuart who performed his latest song “Bailemos”, and salsa star Luis Vázquez who interpreted his hit song “Tu Fan.” As a nod to classic reggaeton, the Latin powerhouses Natti Natasha, Daddy Yankee, and Wisin y Yandel joined forces to bring fans an electric performance of the legendary track “Mayor Que Usted.”
In one of the show’s heartfelt moments, the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation was honored with the prestigious “Agent of Change” recognition for their outstanding work in aiding women and children who have been victims of abuse and domestic violence. Jacqie and Johnny Rivera, children of the late singer, who continue to honor her legacy, received the recognition on behalf of the foundation. This was followed by a special tribute on the 10th anniversary of the singer’s passing, by Mexican regional stars Banda MS and Grupo Firme who performed “No Llega el Olvido,” “Ya Lo Sé,” “Basta Ya,” and “Inolvidable.” Additional honorees of the coveted distinction included recognized stars J Balvin, Kany García, Wisin y Yandel, and Juanpa Zurita, as well as young leaders Omar Negrón Ocasio from Puerto Rico, and Carlitos Swaggy Way from Venezuela, who are driving change in their community and the world.
