Atlanta United vs. Chicago Fire
Match Ends in 2-2 Draw
Reilly Scores First Goal!
Atlanta Latinos Magazine – “We haven’t been good enough.” Those were the words of Atlanta United’s manager, Ronny Deila, after the match Wednesday night against the Chicago Fire at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Atlanta picked up a point, but at this point in the season, with the team so far down in the Eastern Conference standings, the draw was little consolation. Atlanta must string together wins to have a chance at a playoff spot. The match tonight was another missed opportunity in a season full of missed opportunities.
The match got off to a bad start for Atlanta. Chicago scored in the 2’ on an Olimpico goal that bounced in front of the goal and bent in to cross the goal. Philip Zinckernagel earned the goal, his tenth goal of the season.
After halftime, Atlanta found the equalizer in the 55’ to knot the score at 1-1. Alexey Miranchuk was credited with his third goal of the season. Both Miguel Almiron and Bartosz Slisz were given assists.
Chicago re-took the lead 2-1 in the 79’ when Maren Haile-Selassie scored his second goal of the season. Assists were given to Andrew Gutman and Zinckernagel.
Atlanta managed to salvage a draw with a late goal. Will Reilly notched his first ever MLS goal by cashing in on a deflected corner kick.
Atlanta remains at home to face rival Charlotte FC on Saturday, July 19th.
Notes…Charlotte FC’s Gutman returned to face his old club and recorded his 8th assist of the season…Charlotte led in shots 14-10, while Atlanta led time of possession 53-47…attendance was announced as 38,882.
