DECATUR, Ga. — A large law enforcement search near Covington Highway and I-285 has blocked streets, delaying drivers and leaving nearby residents without answers.

Neighbors told 11Alive the search began around 6:45 p.m. behind the QuikTrip on Covington Highway.

Resident Marvelle Moore said he left Midtown around 6:30 p.m., but when he arrived home, his neighborhood was sealed off. He has been waiting to return ever since.

SWAT team, along with DeKalb County Police, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol are investigating and on scene.

SWAT officers were seen on foot, while deputies drove through the neighborhood shining lights into properties. Despite a lot of law enforcement presence, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has not said who they are searching for or why.

Deputies shut down W. Austin Road, stopping cars and searching vehicles as they left the area. An 11Alive crew on scene was also asked whether deputies could search their vehicle. As of 9:50 p.m., the manhunt was still underway.

The closure created confusion at nearby Towers High School, where parents were trying to pick up students from after-school activities. One parent told 11Alive she planned to meet her child after a wrestling match but had to redirect to the QuikTrip because surrounding roads were blocked.

Many neighbors told 11Alive they’re frustrated by the lack of information from law enforcement as the search continued into the night.
