The private elementary school in Dacula will close after this academic year, but parents say they were given no explanation and few answers about tuition or records.
A private elementary school in Gwinnett County will close after the current academic year, a decision that has left families scrambling for clarity about their children’s education and unanswered questions about tuition and records.
Harbins Preparatory School is a tuition-based school serving pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Dacula. The news was released through a public relations firm on Wednesday.
“Harbins Preparatory School will not remain open beyond the current academic year,” the statement said. “We have communicated with families early to give them time to plan for their children’s continued academic success, and our priority remains making this transition as smooth and positive as possible for everyone involved.”
The statement did not include a reason for the closure or details about how families will be supported during the transition.
Parents say they first learned of the decision during a single 30-minute Zoom call hosted by Endeavor Schools, the out-of-state company that owns and operates Harbins Preparatory.
According to families who attended the call, representatives announced the closure but did not explain why the school was shutting down.
Parents said questions about prepaid tuition, student records, academic continuity and transition support went unanswered. Several families described the meeting ending abruptly with what they characterized as a closing message of, “Good luck to you all — you’ve been notified.”
Since that call, parents say they have not received a follow-up meeting, written explanation or a detailed transition plan.
Harbins Preparatory School promotes itself as a community-focused private school offering advanced academics, project-based learning and a “warm, caring environment.” On its website, the school highlights individualized instruction, conversational Spanish, art programs and strong communication with parents.
“Our Kindergarten and elementary programs are well-known in the Dacula area for their quality and results,” the school’s website states. “We pride ourselves on our communication with parents and are here to answer any questions you might have.”
Parents say the handling of the closure conflicts with those promises.
Families affected by the closure say they are now seeking basic answers, including why the school is closing, why the announcement was limited to a brief Zoom call, what protections exist for families when private schools close, and how financial and academic records will be handled.
Neither Endeavor Schools nor Harbins Preparatory School provided additional details beyond the initial statement when contacted.
