Flight attendants and onboard medical professionals assisted as the crew declared an emergency and secured priority landing.

PORTLAND, Ore. — “Baby on board” took on a whole new meaning during a recent commercial flight heading to Portland, Oregon.

Delta Air Lines confirmed that a pregnant passenger went into labor midair, about 30 minutes before the plane was scheduled to land.

The crew declared a medical emergency to receive priority handling from air traffic control. The flight was carrying more than 150 passengers, along with two pilots and four flight attendants.

Flight attendants quickly responded and were assisted by medical professionals on board, including a doctor and two nurses. The airline noted that its crews receive extensive training to handle in-flight medical situations like this.

The plane landed safely and was met by emergency responders. By the time it touched down, the baby had already been delivered.

In a statement, a Delta spokesperson thanked the crew and volunteers who stepped in to help, adding that the airline prioritizes the health and safety of its passengers and wished the family well.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care to a customer onboard prior to landing in Portland. The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority, and we wish the new family all the best.”

According to Delta’s policy, there are no specific restrictions on flying while pregnant or requirements for a medical certificate, though the airline advises passengers to consult a doctor before traveling.
