Rangers across the state will host dozens of guided outings, ranging from kid-friendly strolls and wheelchair-accessible routes to more strenuous treks.

For those who want to get outside and get in those steps to kick off the new year, Georgia’s State Parks and Historic Sites are offering some inspiration with dozens of “First Day Hikes.”

The fun starts on New Year’s Eve with a Last Day Sunset Hike at the Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site in Cartersville. For those who want to stay up late, head to Chattahooche Bend State Park for a stargazing hike. That event starts at 11 p.m. and runs past midnight.

For those early birds and bird lovers, head to the Sunrise First Day Hike at Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs, starting at 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 1. A Finding Your First Bird Hike begins at 8:30 a.m. at Don Carter State Park in Gainesville.

There are about two dozen hiking events within 30 miles of metro Atlanta.

Many of the hikes require an admission fee or a parking fee. Click on the links for details.

Rangers across the state will host dozens of guided outings, ranging from kid-friendly strolls and wheelchair-accessible routes to more strenuous treks for experienced hikers.

Participants can connect with friends, family and nature. They will receive a free First Day Hikes sticker to commemorate their accomplishment as part of the nationwide effort launched by America’s State Parks.
