New Year’s Eve in Atlanta: What you need to know

Atlanta is ringing in the New Year with a fresh twist this December 31. Instead of gathering downtown for the city’s longtime Peach Drop, residents will be able to enjoy a citywide spectacle — complete with synchronized fireworks and creative drone light displays visible across neighborhoods.

Mayor Andre Dickens announced the new celebration, called “Countdown Over ATL”, as a modern, inclusive way to welcome 2026 while keeping safety and accessibility top of mind.

“The Annual Peach Drop has been a big part of our city’s New Year’s Eve since 1989, bringing people together in a way only Atlanta can,” Dickens said. “However, this year, we are reimagining that tradition. All you have to do is step outside, hit your neighborhood spot, meet on a rooftop or watch from your backyard, and you’ll be part of one special shared moment.”

The Digital Drone Peach in the Sky will take flight at 11:45 p.m., lighting up the skies above Downtown, Midtown, and the city’s northwest side. At midnight, multiple fireworks displays will launch across Atlanta and will be visible from many neighborhoods.

Residents are encouraged to watch from home, nearby rooftops, or local gathering spots. If trees or buildings obstruct your view, the city suggests supporting a local business with an elevated deck or joining friends and family who have a more precise vantage point.

This year’s format — spreading the celebration across several locations instead of one downtown hub — is designed to reduce crowding, enhance public safety, and offer a shared experience for all Atlantans.

• Play music or TV at a comfortable volume to help mask loud noises.

• Ensure pets have updated ID tags, collars, or microchips.

For Those Sensitive to Sound

• Fireworks begin promptly at midnight and will last about 12 minutes.

• Consider using earplugs or noise-reducing headphones.

• Move to a quiet space indoors if possible.

• The fireworks are part of an authorized city event managed by licensed experts.

• Do not call 911 to report fireworks unless there is an emergency.

• Be aware of startled pets or neighbors who might need extra support.

City officials called Countdown Over ATL a “signature midnight moment” meant to unify Atlanta through light and sound. The event reinforces Dickens’ vision of a city that celebrates together while prioritizing safety, equity, and access.

“The decentralized celebration allows everyone in Atlanta to be part of the moment,” Dickens said. “Whether you’re Downtown or watching from your backyard, this New Year’s Eve is for all of us.”
