The Georgia Department of Public Health said Monday a baby had contracted measles while traveling internationally.
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Georgia public health officials on Monday reported the first measles case of the year in a baby too young for the MMR (mumps, measles and rubella) vaccine.
Georgia DPH said in a release the baby contracted measles while traveling internationally.
The MMR vaccine is typically first administered to children in a first dose at 12 to 15 months of age and a second dose at 4-6 years old — though an earlier timeline, 6-11 months, is recommended for babies about to travel internationally. Two additional doses after their first birthday are then typically given in such situations.
DPH said the baby lives in the Coastal Health District, which services Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long & McIntosh counties in southeast Georgia.
“DPH is working to identify individuals who may have been exposed to measles through contact with the child,” the release stated.
Health officials ask anyone with measles symptoms to first contact their health provider and not go to a doctor’s office or hospital without calling first, as the illness is extremely contagious. It spreads via coughs and sneezes and can stay in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours, according to DPH.
Symptoms usually appear a week or two after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes before the rash of tiny red spots that most distinctly characterizes the illness appears.
There were 10 measles cases in Georgia in 2025, DPH said. State data shows there were six the year before that, in 2024, and none between 2021-2023.
