In her most challenging time, Lady Thrasher’s assistant head coach Diana Chang leaned on her family by blood and her hockey family.
CUMMING, Ga. — As Diana Chang laces up at The Ice Complex in Cumming, she looks at life with a grateful heart and a fiery passion that’s led her to the rink. Chang moved south to get her Ph.D. She found the Lady Thrashers, an all-female community hockey team, through a Google search and things just clicked for her when she found the squad.
“I grew up playing, especially with the boys,” Chang said. “We started playing street hockey and roller hockey. The lights would go up at 6 at night, and we’d be there until ten playing. That’s kind of what fueled my love for it. I started in a developmental league they had just started for girls back in 1999, 2000. Time transitioned, they ended up needing some coaches with some experience and they were looking for women coaches in particular to be able to support other women in this sport.”
Chang, the Lady Thrasher’s assistant coach, would soon need support herself. A few checks on the boards could not compete with the ultimate gut check she received in March 2022, when doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer.
“Hockey is a very interesting sport in terms of your lasting friendships,” Chang said. “They were there to support me through it. I got phone calls, cards, flowers, I got meals delivered to the house.”
In her most challenging time, Chang leaned on her family by blood and her hockey family. She coaches her two young boys in the sport and has built her community along the way. Within months, Chang found herself back on the ice, viewing hockey as an escape from hardship outside the rink.
So now, as Chang checks on form and runs point at practice, she still holds the same passion. She looks at life through the lens of hockey with a grateful heart.
“It would be a very difficult life without this sport, very much so,” Chang said. “I’d still find a way to keep in it, but playing is my true passion. I like watching, I like cheering my friends on. Stepping on the ice is a whole different feeling.”
