GDOT crews are working in the two right lanes of I-285 SB near MLK to do emergency repairs to the shoulder.

ATLANTA — Emergency work in west Atlanta that began in the overnight hours on Wednesday could last until late Thursday night. Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) crews are working in the two right lanes on I-285 SB (Outer Loop) after MLK Jr. Dr. (Exit 9), as they repair the right shoulder.

GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale told 11Alive that the crew went to make a repair to reinforce the concrete on the right emergency lane and found it needed extensive work. This prompted them to dig a 15-20 feet-long hole and then begin filling it with gravel. They will then have to pour concrete and see it cure before they leave the scene. Dale said this could last until 10 p.m.

Traffic began backing up before 6 a.m. and got progressively worse through the morning. Traffic anchor Rachel Cox-Rosen sent drivers into Downtown Atlanta to take I-75/85 SB as an alternate route. Traffic was jammed for several miles back into Cobb County on I-285 SB and both I-75 SB and I-75/85 SB saw extra traffic, as people avoided I-285.

Stay with 11Alive for updates on the traffic impacts and the repairs.
