It’s the first time Panera has dipped its toes into value meals. Each of the $5 items can be paired up, to a max of 10.
WASHINGTON — Panera Bread is rolling out a new value-focused option as the fast-casual chain looks to attract budget-minded diners.
The company on Wednesday announced the launch of its new “Mix & Match” value menu, which allows customers to choose from a lineup of soups, salads and sandwiches priced at $5 each.
The offering marks the first time the chain has introduced a dedicated value menu built around smaller portions of existing favorites.
According to Panera, guests can combine two or more items, up to all 10 available options. Each order includes a choice of a baguette, chips or an apple on the side.
The lineup features half portions of sandwiches such as the Toasted Italiano, Toasted Caprese Focaccia, Bacon Turkey Bravo and Cranberry Walnut Chicken Salad, the Fuji Apple Chicken salad, the Ranch Parm BLT and Caesar salad, as well as soup options.
Mark Shambura, the company’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement that the menu is designed to provide a lower-priced option while maintaining the chain’s emphasis on “thoughtfully sourced” ingredients.
Panera said the new value lineup will operate alongside its existing You Pick Two offering, which allows customers to pair items from the full menu at standard prices. The company did not announce an end date for the promotion, noting the menu will also include a rotating seasonal item throughout the year.
The light food chain is the latest fast food company to announce lower-cost offerings in recent months. Wendy’s now offers a “Biggie Deals” menu with items starting at $4. Taco Bell’s “Luxe Value” meals start at $3.
The move to bring back cheap fast food options comes as consumer spending on ready-made meals has declined in recent years, partly because of prices. The COVID-19 pandemic at the turn of the decade and the resulting economic roller-coaster caused inflation to skyrocket, driving prices up.
