WASHINGTON — Love is in the air for penguins at the Edinburgh Zoo as breeding season begins.
For a fourth year in a row, children at the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity helped the penguins in their courtship for a partner by painting colorful pebbles. According to the zoo, penguins try to win over their perfect match by presenting the “most beautiful pebbles they can find.”
More than 1,000 pebbles were painted and hand-delivered to the penguins by the children, spoiling the penguins with choices for their courtships.
“For the fourth year in a row, children in hospital have been getting creative by painting colourful pebbles for the penguins at Edinburgh Zoo,” the zoo said in a Facebook post on Mar. 6. “A huge thank you to Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity for helping make this possible. Together we’re helping children stay connected to nature even during the toughest hospital stays.”
The Edinburgh Zoo has more than 100 gentoo penguins, which were already picking the best nesting rings in their habitat. The zoo also had a Penguins Love Pebbles event on Feb. 18 where visitors can purchase a pebble to paint. If a penguin picks your pebble, the visitor could get a chance to name a chick, according to the zoo.
Fan-favorite penguins Mittens and Muffins paired up again this year to build a nest. The zoo said they were the first gentoo penguin couple to have chicks last year.
The zoo also had live webcams of the penguins so people can see whether their pebbles were picked for true love.
