The HBCU’s Alternative Spring Break program continues to inspire students to trade vacation for service
ATLANTA — John Lewis Invictus Academy welcomed special visitors from Howard University this week — students who are offering to mentor young people, build clothing closets, or create award medals for students.
“It’s really cool to come back here and see the environments that I grew up in and show the kids that there’s a future they haven’t thought of yet,” said Maxine Smith, a junior from Kennesaw.
For most college students, spring break is a time for vacation, but for Smith and her fellow Bison, it’s a chance to roll up their sleeves and give back to the community.
Bryce Barber, a freshman from Mableton, is also volunteering, “Atlanta is kind of a hard city, especially metro Atlanta. I know because I’ve been around people who’ve had hard comings-up, but it’s possible to make it out if you work hard, study hard, and have the right people to show you the way.”
The program is organized by student leaders like Kennedi Lango, who explained the motivation behind returning year after year, “Every time it’s such a unique and special experience. It’s the family, the bonds,” she said.
The student volunteers say they wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I love Atlanta, and it’s great to get back to the community. I just want to show these kids that you’re probably going to enjoy Howard, too,” Barber said.
“Realizing that I could give back to the people who gave back to me when I was their age, poured into me in this city, and knowing I could show my love for the city is great,” added Smith.
