WASHINGTON — Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. underwent surgery on Tuesday, according to a department spokesperson.
The HHS secretary underwent rotator cuff surgery and plans to return to the office on Monday. The agency did not disclose what type of rotator cuff surgery Kennedy, 72, received on Tuesday.
What is rotator cuff surgery?
Rotator cuffs are a group of tendons and muscles in your shoulders that help lift and rotate your arm, Wed MD says. It also plays a part in keeping your shoulder joint in place.
Injuries can often lead to rotator cuff problems, but overall wear and tear over time can also take its toll. According to Wed MD, the pain can be severe.
These injuries are most common for people who have jobs where they repeat overhead motions such as painters and carpenters.
Surgery is recommended if someone is still experiencing pain after nonsurgical options such as physical therapy.
There are several types of surgery to fix rotator cuff injuries, according to Mayo Clinic. Most surgeries can be done on an outpatient basis and don’t require hospital stays.
Arthroscopic tendon repair and open tendon repair are the most common. Arthroscopic tendon repair involves surgeons inserting a tiny camera and tools through small incisions to help reattach the torn tendon to the bone. For open tendon repair, a surgeon works to reattached the damaged tendon through a larger incision.
When tendons are too damaged surgeons may opt for a tendon transfer or even a shoulder replacement if the injuries are too large.
