Friends honor civil rights trailblazer and the former mayor as he turns 94, celebrating his lifelong impact on the city and the world
Atlanta is honoring a living legend today as civil rights leader, diplomat, and former mayor Andrew Young turns 94.
For many Atlantans, Young is more than a historical figure—he is someone they’ve known personally, making his birthday a moment to celebrate one of the last leaders from the inner circle of the civil rights movement.
While Young is widely recognized for his roles as Atlanta’s mayor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, he is also remembered as a devoted father and mentor.
Historian Dr. Herman “Skip” Mason, president of the Interdenominational Theological Center, first met Young through his children while attending summer camp in the early 1970s.
“I absolutely adore Andrew Jackson Young. And have since I was a young kid attending Camp Blue Star in North Carolina with his children in the early ’70s,” Mason said.
Mason, who has written extensively on Atlanta’s history, recalls Young’s inspiring presence and the example he set for future generations.
I witnessed him give a speech without notes, and I said, ‘When I grow up, I want to be like Andy Young.’ I want to be able to stand and articulate and speak about issues without looking down at any notes. He has always been a wonderful role model and a great friend. He nominated me for national president of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and it was my honor to pin him with his 65-year membership pin,” Mason said.
Beyond his local impact, Young put Atlanta on the global stage and continues to tell his own story, even producing a documentary in his 90s. Images of Young at the MLK Memorial serve as reminders of his lasting influence.
“With the recent passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson, the youngster in the movement, Ambassador Andrew Young stands as the last beacon of that era. I hope we continue to love on him and celebrate him—not only today, on his ninety-fourth birthday, but as we prepare the next generation of young men and women to serve in their God-given areas,” Mason said.
