WASHINGTON — “KPop Demon Hunters” will have a sequel, Netflix announced on Thursday.
The announcement is a golden opportunity for the streaming giant to extend the success of its hit animated musical film.
The movie’s original writers and directors will return to introduce audiences to the next adventure of the fictional girl group Huntrix, who use their singing voices to create a barrier between humans and demons, all while battling rival K-pop idols and bands.
Maggie Kang, who directed the first movie alongside American Chris Appelhans, said the sequel would be “only the beginning” for the hunters.
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang said. “There’s so much to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you.”
The English-language Sony Pictures Animation production was produced in the United States but featured mostly Korean and Korean-American stars.
Netflix did not give a release date for the sequel.
It’s a big week for the American-Korean collaboration, as the movie’s crew heads into the 98th Academy Awards with two nominations — Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.” The award ceremony will air Sunday night.
Released in June 2025, “KPop Demon Hunters” was Netflix’s most-watched English-language movie of all time, reaching 236 million views by August.
While Netflix does not report grosses from streaming views, the movie managed to rake in $25 million from a limited theatrical release, a record for the streaming service. Inside the theater, fans were encouraged to sing along to Huntrix’s songs.
The impact and success of the animated film extended far beyond the world of movies, with its music and style becoming a cultural phenomenon. The movie’s song “Golden” spent eight weeks at the number one spot on the American Billboard Hot 100. The movie’s official soundtrack also reached number one on the US Billboard 200 albums last year.
