TSA says PreCheck Touchless ID can speed up checks at select airports, where wait times have grown. Here’s how to sign up and a list of participating airports.
WASHINGTON — Long security lines at U.S. airports during the partial government shutdown are pushing some travelers to look for ways to move through checkpoints faster.
One option that’s starting to gain more attention is using TSA PreCheck Touchless ID.
During the shutdown, the Department of Homeland Security says hundreds of Transportation Security Administration employees have resigned or taken unscheduled leave while continuing to work without pay, contributing to longer wait times at security checkpoints nationwide.
TSA says its PreCheck Touchless ID program uses facial comparison technology to speed up identity verification. Travelers enrolled in the program can use dedicated lanes at participating airports, which often have the shortest wait times.
How to sign up for TSA Touchless ID
Touchless ID is currently available at about 65 airports across the country.
To enroll, passengers must already be a TSA PreCheck member and have an active frequent flyer account with participating airlines.
On your respective airline account, travelers then need to opt-in to Touchless ID and upload passport information and a Known Traveler Number before checking in for a flight.
Five major U.S. airlines are currently part of the program; Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. Each airline offers its own opt-in process through its rewards account website or mobile app.
Once you check-in for your flight, check your boarding pass to ensure the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID indicator appears. If you have that logo on the boarding pass, you’ll be allowed to enter the dedicated TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lane.

TSA says the program is designed to make the screening process “faster” and “more efficient,” while maintaining security. Even after enrolling, passengers are still required to carry a REAL ID-compliant form of identification in case it is requested.
A map of the airports with TSA Touchless ID capability is available on the TSA website.
Which airports have touchless ID?
As of March 2026, these are the airports offering touchless ID, according to the TSA and airlines. The agency says it’ll be at 65 airports by Spring 2026.
