There’s a heartwarming update in the story of the Western New York quintuplets born just before Christmas. One of the babies is finally home.
WEST SENECA, N.Y. — We have another positive update in a story we’ve been following about quintuplets born the week before Christmas.
The mother, Jessica Lottbrein, told 2 On Your Side that Stefan — the third baby — is now home. She said that he was discharged from the hospital on March 10.
Siblings Mason and Connor are still at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and are experiencing some setbacks, but Lottbrein said they are “powering through.”
Quintuplet pregnancies are incredibly rare and considered high-risk. According to doctors at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, this delivery marks only the second time quintuplets have been born in Buffalo’s history.
“It’s extremely rare,” said Valerie Elberson, associate medical director of the NICU. “The numbers I have seen are one in fifteen in a year in all of the world, and in Buffalo we’ve only had it happen one other time.”
Preparing for the delivery required months of planning and collaboration. Teams from the Maternal Fetal Medicine Center and Golisano Children’s Hospital worked together early on to prepare for every possible scenario.
Lottbrein was admitted to the hospital in mid-December. Just after midnight on Dec. 18, her water broke. Dozens of medical professionals rushed into action, including many who were called in from home in the middle of the night.
“I was wheeled right in right before 2, and Mason was out at 2:03, and Connor was out by 2:11,” Jessica said. “It was so incredibly fast. It went for the most part, as smoothly as I remember.”
