WACO, Ga. — Helen Woodyard never misses class.
Three days a week, the 90-year-old drives herself to West Georgia Technical College, where she’s working toward her GED. Nearly every night, she’s studying.
Ms. Helen walked into the college for the first time on her 88th birthday. She had watched her children earn their degrees and decided she wanted that same moment for herself. So she started from the beginning.
Now, math is her favorite subject. She’s learning how to use a scientific calculator and navigate computer programs for her exams — skills she can now do on her own. She credits her instructors in Adult Education for helping her get there.
“When I came to class on my first day, it was like I had never left, even 80 years later,” she said. “It’s never too late to pursue your education or get your GED. Nothing is going to come to you if you sit there and wait for it.”
But what stands out most is her determination. She keeps showing up. She keeps learning.
After she earns her diploma, Ms. Helen wants to help other older adults learn to read and write. At 90, she’s not just reaching a goal for herself — she’s already thinking about who she can lift up next.
