You can add Southwest to the list of airlines increasing checked bag fees this week.

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines is joining the growing list of U.S. airlines raising checked bag fees as jet fuel costs soar.

First and second checked bags will now cost $10 more as part of Southwest’s ongoing changing business analysis given the current economy and war in Iran.

Southwest Airlines ended its policy allowing two free checked bags per customer less than a year ago.

The change will go into effect on Thursday, April 9 for all reservations made on or after that date, according to a press release. Those with reservations already booked will not be affected unless the flight is voluntarily changed.

List Preferred and Choice Extra customers will not be affected and continue to receive two free checked bags.

A List and Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers will also continue to receive their first checked bag free.

There will be no change for active-duty military members regarding checked bag benefits.

How much does it cost to check a bag on Southwest?

Pricing from Southwest Airlines listed below:

  • First checked bag going from $35 to $45
  • Second checked bag going from $45 to $55

The Southwest Airlines increase comes shortly after Jet Blue, United Airlines, and Delta all increased their baggage fees recently.
