FORT SMITH, Ark. — A World War II and Korean War veteran celebrated 99 years of life on April 6 the same way he’s spent much of it: staying active and surrounded by others.
Troy Pike marked his birthday in Fort Smith with cake, family, friends, and a few strikes at the bowling alley, an activity that has been a constant in his life for decades.
“Bowling is a beautiful game…I still enjoy bowling, I love the people that I bowl with. Everybody’s good,” Pike said.
Pike has bowled all over the country, but for the past 15 years, he’s called Bowling World in Fort Smith home, and said he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
Pike said bowling is more than just a hobby–it’s something that keeps him moving and connected to his community.
After serving in two wars, Pike carried that same energy into his civilian life, always finding ways to stay busy and help others. He spent 30 years teaching people how to operate printing presses and worked for years as a truck driver, traveling across the country.
“I probably trucked in every city it at least 100 times, and I knew I didn’t even need a road map because I trucked so many times,” Pike said.
Through every chapter of his life, Pike says one thing has remained the same: his desire to serve others.
“Most of my life, I’ve helped people,” Pike said. “When I was teaching them, the printing presses how to print, I must have taught 100,000 people.”
That mindset, along with a commitment to staying active, is something Pike believes has helped him reach 99.
“I never stopped for nothing, and I worked out after I walked my puppy dog, went to the gym, and I worked out for 30-40 minutes every morning and night,” he said.
Even now, Pike continues to stay active, regularly bowling and spending time with loved ones. When it comes to life, he says there’s one lesson he’s always carried with him.
“I don’t give up. [My] dad [said], when you start something, you finish it, you don’t stop in the middle of the street,” Pike said.
After nearly a century of life, that message is one he still holds close to his heart.
