Delta confirmed a passenger gave birth while on a flight from Georgia, 30 minutes out from the Portland International Airport. The plane landed safely.

PORTLAND, Ore. — “Baby on board” took on a whole new meaning Friday evening.

Delta Air Lines confirmed that a pregnant passenger started giving birth 30 minutes out from the Portland International Airport during Flight 478 from Georgia.

The crew declared an emergency for priority handling with Air Traffic Control. The flight had 153 passengers, with two pilots and four flight attendants on board.

Those flight attendants sprang into action and were assisted by a doctor and two nurses, with the airline noting that its flight crews undergo comprehensive medical training for these exact situations.

The flight landed around 10 p.m. and was met by emergency medical responders. The baby had been safely delivered.

Delta spokesperson Sabrina Cole confirmed the event, saying in a statement:

“We extend our sincere thanks to the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care to a customer onboard prior to landing in Portland. The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority, and we wish the new family all the best.”

The Delta Air Lines website says that while it doesn’t impose restrictions on flying while pregnant or require a medical certificate, it’s a “good idea” to check with your doctor beforehand. It also dryly adds, “Keep in mind, ticket change fees and penalties cannot be waived for pregnancy.”
