This change marks the first widespread return to above-average temperatures in several weeks
After weeks of persistent cold, the overall weather pattern across parts of the United States is beginning to shift. A strengthening ridge of high pressure is building over the country, allowing milder air to replace much of the Arctic cold that dominated January.

This change marks the first widespread return to above-average temperatures in several weeks, offering a noticeable break from the harsh winter conditions many have endured.
Here’s a snapshot of what Saturday afternoon has in store! While most of the US will be warming up, the Northeast will be staying cold as another round of arctic air clips the Midwest and the New England area.

Here’s a zoomed in forecast for the Midwest and Northeast United states. Air temperatures as cold as the single digits with wind chills colder into the second week of February.

The deepening trough that helps dislodge arctic air will be slow to move east and out of the U.S. As a result, arctic air will linger for that part of the country for early February.
As February moves into its middle stretch, temperatures are expected to climb well above seasonal norms in some areas. Forecasts suggest highs running 10 to 20 degrees above average for portions of the country, particularly across the central and eastern U.S. This warmer pattern will be a welcome contrast after consecutive days of freezing temperatures that defined much of January.
The warming trend comes as relief for communities still recovering from recent snow and ice storms. Extended periods of cold weather strained infrastructure, disrupted travel, and increased heating demands nationwide. While winter is far from over, this temporary shift toward milder conditions provides a much-needed pause and a reminder of the changing patterns that often define late winter in the United States.
