State emergency officials issued a stark warning to Georgians on Friday, citing the potential for significant travel hazards, widespread damage and power outages this weekend.
An ice storm warning was issued for the metro Atlanta area, extending across north Georgia. It’s the first such warning since February 2014. That ice storm came just weeks after the area’s infamous “Snowmaggedon” that crippled the area for days.
The current forecast indicates that rain will begin on Saturday afternoon, intensifying in the evening and overnight. Areas around Atlanta could see 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice. Areas of northeast Georgia may get up to an inch. Then, temps will plummet into the teens on Tuesday.
Officials expect significant damage to trees and power lines, especially in areas northeast of Atlanta, where up to an inch of ice could accumulate. Areas around Atlanta could also see damage, and travel could be extremely difficult.
Plans are already in place to bring in out-of-state utility crews to help restore power.
Road crews have two million gallons of brine to treat the roads.
GDOT will start applying that solution tonight and run overnight in 12-hour shifts in the affected areas.
The priority will be interstates and heavily traveled state roads.
