Astronauts are testing systems and preparing Orion for a lunar flyby, the mission’s most critical phase before returning to Earth.
WASHINGTON — NASA’s Artemis II mission is now more than halfway to the moon, marking a major milestone for the first crewed lunar mission in more than 50 years.
The four-person crew has traveled more than 160,000 miles from Earth since launching April 1 and continues to close in on the moon ahead of a planned lunar flyby. The mission is designed to take astronauts farther into space than any humans have traveled before.
“We all had a collective expression of joy at that… We can see the Moon out of the docking hatch right now. It’s a beautiful sight,” astronaut Christina Koch said in an update shared by NASA.
The crew — consisting of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Hammock Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen — has spent the journey preparing for the next phase of the mission while conducting onboard activities.
NASA said astronauts have been exercising, practicing medical response procedures and testing emergency communication systems in deep space. The team also began preparing the Orion spacecraft cabin for the upcoming lunar observation period after an earlier trajectory correction burn was canceled.
Artemis II will not land on the moon but will loop around it before returning to Earth as part of the agency’s broader plan to return humans to the lunar surface later this decade.
The mission is scheduled to last about 10 days, with the lunar flyby marking one of its most critical and closely watched moments.
