Atlanta United Dominates FC Cincinnati
Josef Scores Two Goals
Mercedes-Benz Stadium – Atlanta United scored early and often in dominating FC Cincinnati 4-0. Cincinnati entered the match second to last in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile Atlanta was a team on the rise, having won five out of its last six.
Luiz Araujo scored the first goal of the match in the 5th minute. He created the goal off his own dribble from 40 yards out and bashed the ball into the far post. It was his first goal as an Atlanta United player. An assist was credited to Alan Franco, also his first ever assist in MLS competition.
Later in the first Josef Martinez converted a header into the back of the net to make the score 2-0. Assists were created to both Araujo and Franco.
Martinez added his second goal of the night early in the second half. He took a pass from Ezequiel Barco in the 55’, dribbled to his left, and shot passed a flat-footed goalkeeper to find the back of the net.
Barco would add a goal of his own in the 86’ off of a free kick. It was his sixth goal of the season.
Atlanta’s defense was stout once again. It recorded its second straight shutout, with Brad Guzan earning his seventh of the season.
With the win, Atlanta vaults above the playoff line. Atlanta is at full strength and rounding into form. The coaching changes have re-energized the team, turning around a season that looked lost early on. Atlanta’s next match is at home against D.C. United on Saturday, September 18th.
