Atlanta Latinos Magazine – Atlanta United kept up its home winning ways on Sunday, defeating the Chicago Fire 3-0 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta has won all three home matches this season.
Giorgos Giakoumakis opened the scoring for Atlanta, sliding one under the Chicago goalkeeper just before halftime in the 45’. Saba Lobjanidze earned he assist on a beautiful pass. A secondary assist was given to Xande Silva.
Giakoumakis left the game in the 63’ with a knee injury. He was replaced by backup striker Jamal Thiare, who made an immediate impact on the game. One minute after entering the game, and on his first touch, Thiare headed an insurance goal. The assist was given to Brooks Lennon, who put in a wonderful cross that led to the goal. Saba was credited with a secondary assist, his second of the game.
Thiare would add his second goal of the game late in stoppage time. He found the back of the net on the near side in the 95’.
The defense was once again solid, helping goalkeeper Brad Guzan earn his second clean sheet of the year. Defender Noah Cobb was excellent in the backline filling in for the injured starter Stian Gregersen, who recently had meniscus surgery.
Atlanta travels to New York next Saturday night to take on New York City FC.
Notes…Giakoumakis’s goal was his 22nd for Atlanta United in MLS competition, propelling him into second place all-time in team history, behind only Josef Martinez…Lennon and Saba are tied with the team lead in assists with three each…with the move, Atlanta moves up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings, with at least one game in hand versus the field…Atlanta dominated play, enjoying a 15 to 5 shot advantage…attendance was announced as 42,525.
