Atlanta United vs. DC United

Atlanta United Topples DC United 3-1

Gutman With Goal and Assist

Atlanta Latinos Magazine – Finally Atlanta United put together a complete performance, defeating the visiting DC United 3-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday night.  After having its worst offense output in team history last game, and after leading the league in goals against for most of the season, both Atlanta’s offense and defense played well.

Atlanta struck early.  In the 13’, leading goal scorer Giorgos Giakoumakis corralled an over-the-top direct pass on the left side, nimbly maneuvered around an out-of-position goalkeeper, and sent a worm-burner that evaded the remaining backline to easily roll into the back of the net.  It was Giakoumakis’s tenth goal of the season, propelling him to a four-way tie for the MLS league lead in that category.

DC would answer in the 27’.  Taxiarchis Fountas banged home his fourth goal of the season, taking a turnover around midfield, dribbling untouched to the box, and firing a shot past Atlanta’s Brad Guzan.

Atlanta scored the winning goal soon after halftime.  In the 49’, Thiago Almada slipped a beautiful pass to a streaking Andrew Gutman.  Gutman drilled it passed the goalkeeper for the go-ahead score.  It was Gutman’s third goal of the season.

Atlanta would tack on an insurance goal in the 73’.  Gutman got behind the defense and crossed the goal directly on the goal line.  A sliding Tyler Wolff was able to muscle the ball into the net.  Initially the goal was waived off due to offsides.  But video review reversed the call.  It was Wolff’s third goal in the past four games.

Atlanta’s defense was solid once again.  After a spectacular performance with nine saves against LAFC on Wednesday, Gutman followed up that performance with several more impressive saves.  He had four saves on 13 shots.

Atlanta next plays at home against New York City on Wednesday, June 21st.

Notes… Giakoumakis is the fastest player in team history to reach ten MLS goals in a season…Miles Robinson recorded his first assist of the season on Giakoumakis’s goal…it was Robinson’s second assist in his career, with the previous one coming against Nashville on 5/29/2021…Almada recorded his ninth assist of the season, which continues to lead MLS…attendance was announced as 42,539.
