Almada Shines Bright

Atlanta Latinos Magazine – After a three-week break and the addition of several players vis the transport portal, Atlanta United has found new life.  With a decisive 2-0 road victory at Seattle on Sunday, United followed that up with a convincing 4-0 beat down of Nashville SC on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The star of the night was no surprise.  Thiago Almada scored a goal, recorded two assists, and nearly scored by hitting the post on at least two other occasions.  Almada is now the league leader in assists.  The addition of Xande Silva and Tristan Muyumba seemed to give more space for Almada to play with the flair and creativity that was missing during the middle of the season.

Atlanta scored its first goal in the 26’.  Xande Silva scored his goal of the season in only his second appearance with the club.  Almada was credited with the assist.

The pair switched roles for the second goal, scoring a goal immediately after the halftime break.  In the 46’, after a Nashville turnover, Silva found Almada to make the score 2-0.  It was Almada’s ninth goal of the season.

Atlanta tacked on a goal in the 57’.  Defender Miles Robinson headed in a corner kick from Almada to make it 3-0.  It was Miles’s first goal of this season and only the second of his career.

The final goal was scored in the 87’ when Saba Lobjanidze backheeled the ball into the back of the net.  Saba, from Georgia the country, had only been here for three days and had only two training sessions with the team.  He subbed in for Silva in the 61’.

The defense was solid once game, allowing only one shot on target.  Goalkeeper Brad Guzan earned his second consecutive clean sheet and seventh of the season.  The new pairing of defensive midfielders Robinson and Luis Abram helped solidify the backline.

Atlanta’s next match is at home against first place FC Cincinnati on Wednesday, August 30th.

Notes…Atlanta started the match tied with Nashville for sixth place in the Eastern Conference…Almada leads the league in assists and key passes…attendance was announced as 67,514.
