New York FC Wins 2-1
United’s Season Comes to a Disappointing End
Atlanta Latinos Magazine – The roof was open. It was a beautiful day for soccer at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Unfortunately, for the Atlanta United faithful, the team was playing out the string, having been eliminated from playoff contention a week earlier.
Decision day was decidedly anti-climactic but was a microcosm of what plagued the team throughout the season. As United manager Gonzalo Pineda pointed out in the post-game press conference, the team plays winning soccer between the boxes but struggles in the offensive and defensive final thirds.
New York scored the lone goal of the first half. In the 9th minute, Gabriel Pereira scored his eighth goal of the season. The assist was credited to Talles Magno, which was his 10th of the season.
New York added its second and final goal in the 60th minute. The Brazilian attacker Heber came off the bench to record his eighth goal of the season. Assists were given to Alexander Callens and Pereira.
Atlanta finally tallied a goal in the 67th minute. Andrew Gutman found the back of the net. Both Thiago Almada and Luiz Araujo earned assists. It was Gutman’s fourth goal of the season.
Fan favorite and all-time great Josef Martinez subbed in right after the halftime break in what could be his final appearance for Atlanta United. He had a tumultuous year, as he dealt with injury, coming off the bench, and recently getting suspended for after game antics in the locker room. He has one more year remaining on his contract, but he has made his displeasure with the front office publicly known. After the game, Martinez refused to answer questions from the media, saying to “talk to Bocanegra and Pineda.”
Notes…Almada earned his team leading 12th assist of the season…Santiago Sosa was suspended for the match, serving the first of a three game suspension for using homophobic language. He will serve the remainder of his suspension in the first two matches of next season…New York FC secured the third seed in the Eastern Conference and will host a first round match…attendance was announced as 43,312.
