ATLANTA — For as long as he can remember, DeVonte Joseph wanted to be a basketball star. When those dreams didn’t pan out, he didn’t stop chasing athletic greatness — he simply changed direction.
Now 24, the Atlanta native is a professional cheer athlete, known for his speed, control, and fearless tumbling, which has captivated millions online. His videos often feature him performing flips and twists so complex that most wouldn’t dare attempt them.
“I would say I’m very good at every aspect of tumbling,” Joseph said.
That confidence is hard-earned. At a recent pro cheer competition, Joseph stunned spectators by landing a “quadruple full” — a twisting flip so challenging and dangerous that it’s technically banned in the sport.
“I didn’t know it was illegal.”
He now acknowledges that the rules were updated for safety as tumbling evolves and athletes continue to push the boundaries.
Joseph’s path into cheerleading began on a patch of grass in his backyard. With no nearby gymnastics gym, he taught himself to flip and, at his mother’s encouragement, joined a cheer team. The decision changed everything.
That leap led him from local teams to elite competitions — and even a featured appearance on Netflix’s docuseries Cheer.
Today, Joseph is a member of the Atlanta Air, part of the National Pro Cheer League, which pays athletes to compete at a professional level — a first for the sport.
“I didn’t expect to be doing this because I was so focused on basketball,” Joseph said. “But when I gave that up and put my focus on tumbling, I became obsessed with it.”
