Arnold shared his kidney cancer diagnosis in 2025.

WASHINGTON — Brad Arnold, the founder, lead singer and songwriter of the rock band 3 Doors Down, died Saturday, Feb. 7, at the age of 47, the band said.

“With his beloved wife Jennifer and his family by his side, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in his sleep after his courageous battle with cancer,” the statement said.

Arnold helped form 3 Doors Down in 1996 in Escatawpa, Mississippi, and became a central figure in mainstream rock in the late 1990s and 2000s. As a founding member, original drummer and vocalist, he blended “post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonated with everyday listener,” the band says.

He wrote some of the band’s most enduring hits, including their breakout track “Kryptonite,” which he wrote at age 15.

“His music reverberated far beyond the stage, creating moments of connection, joy, faith and shared experiences that will live on long after the stages he performed on,” the band’s statement said. “Those closest to him will remember not only his talent, but his warmth, humility, faith, and deep love for his family and friends.”

In May 2025, Arnold revealed on social media that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer that had metastasized to his lungs, forcing the cancellation of planned tour dates.

“Got some not so good news for you today. So, I’d been sick a couple of weeks ago and then went to the hospital and got checked out, and actually got the diagnosis that I had a clear cell renal cell carcinoma that had metastasized into my lung,” he said at the time. “And it’s stage four, and that’s not real good.”

Arnold is survived by his wife, Jennifer. The family has asked for privacy at this time.
