The Campbellton Park expansion will further integrate it into the Chattahoochee RiverLands project that aims for a continuous 100-mile public parkland.

CHATTAHOOCHEE HILLS, Ga. — The city of Chattahoochee Hills made a $2.5 million acquisition this month of a nearly 80-acre parcel to expand Campbellton Park, further integrating it into the ambitious Chattahoochee RiverLands project.

The acquisition was aided with $1.9 million from a Georgia Department of Natural Resources program, the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program, as well as “matching contributions made possible by a generous land donation from one of the property owners.”

It was announced December 2 by the Trust for Public Land, the nonprofit group behind the RiverLands project.

A release said the acquisition will grow Campbellton Park from 18 to more than 95 acres.

“The acquisition builds on the April 2025 ribbon cutting that celebrated recent improvements at Campbellton Park and sets the stage for future phases of development focused on expanded trail connections and interpretive amenities,” the release said.

It’s not clear yet exactly how the new acreage will be developed for the park.

Chattahoochee Hills Mayor Tom Reed said the city was “proud to preserve this remarkable stretch of riverfront for generations to come.”

Campbellton Park, on Cochran Road, currently has campsites and picnic areas, among other amenities, and is accessible for walking, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and more. It’s described as the third official “take-out site” along a 48-mile blueway called the Camp + Paddle Trail stretching from Atlanta to  Carroll County.

“This project is a major milestone for the Chattahoochee RiverLands vision,” said George Dusenbury, Georgia State Director for Trust for Public Land. “By expanding Campbellton Park, we’re connecting more people to nature, recreation and the river that defines this region. It’s a model of what’s possible when local leadership, state resources and community generosity come together.”

A 2020 booklet gives an overview of the ambitious Chattahoochee RiverLands project.

“When complete, the Chattahoochee RiverLands will connect nearly 1 million nearby residents and visitors to the outdoors where they will be able to kayak, swim, bicycle, picnic, walk, camp and wheel along the river. Stretching across 20 cities and seven counties, this network of trails will bring people to the water’s edge, spark a lifelong love of the river and reveal the magic of the Chattahoochee to all,” the Trust for Public Land says.
