Cobb Schools will implement a cell phone ban in accordance with state law.
COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County Schools on Thursday night passed a plan to implement a cell phone ban in the district, in accordance with state law.
Georgia’s Distraction Free Education Act, passed this year, requires all districts to prohibit cell phones and other electronics to provide for a “positive learning environment free from electronic distractions” for grades K-8 by January 1 and implement their policies by July 1.
The board in Cobb County unanimously passed their version, a one-page policy.
“Students in grades K-8 are not permitted to access personal electronic devices while on school grounds during school hours, including but not limited to cell phones, smart watches, tablets, e-readers, headphones, earbuds and other devices with functionalities such as wireless communication, internet access, messaging, video recording, gaming, social media access or data transmission during school hours,” the policy states.
Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale said at Thursday night’s meeting that he didn’t see the policy as a very large deviation from what the district already regulates.
“We already have a policy that addresses cell phone discipline, and all of the infractions from the last year make up 0.02% of the total number of infractions, so not a big deal for our district,” he said.
