HOUSTON — A grieving Alvin ISD community came together Saturday morning to honor the life of 8-year-old Nicholas Gray, a Pomona Elementary student who died last month after choking on a grape at school.
Dozens of friends, family members, teachers and classmates gathered at a park in Manvel for a memorial bubble release — a tribute his mother says reflects who he was.
“We knew there needed to be a way for the community to say goodbye and honor him, so we decided to have a bubble release so students, teachers and staff could attend,” said his mother, Kenzie Gray.
As bubbles filled the sky, loved ones embraced, prayed and shared memories of a boy they say brought joy to everyone around him.
When asked why bubbles, Gray said they symbolize her son’s personality.
“Bubbles represent lightheartedness and fun, and that’s exactly who my son is… he’s lighthearted and fun, and he has a smile that can light up the world,” she said.
Gray said she has been overwhelmed by the support from the community.
“I’m so very grateful and so proud… proud is an understatement to be Nicholas Gray’s mother,” she said.
Nicholas’ father also addressed the crowd, encouraging people to remember his son with positivity.
“I just ask that anytime you think of Nicholas, you think of positivity,” he said. “He was a gift to us all… he was truly my angel.”
Nicholas, a third grader, Cub Scout and one of five siblings, died Feb. 10 after Alvin ISD officials say he choked on a grape during snack time at school.
Despite efforts from school staff and emergency responders, officials said the grape was lodged too far down to be removed.
His family said Nicholas was laid to rest in Louisiana, where they are from.
During the memorial, his mother shared a message to her son.
“I want you to know that in your absence, we’ll never forget about you. We’ll live in your name, and we’ll honor your name every day,” she said.
The district has previously said it has crisis response teams available to support students and staff following the tragedy.
