Chloe Kim looked to win her third straight Olympic gold in the women’s snowboard halfpipe competition. Here’s how she did.
MILAN, Metropolitan City of Milan — Three U.S. athletes competed in the women’s snowboard halfpipe competition Thursday, including two-time reigning champ Chloe Kim and her teammates Maddie Mastro and Bea Kim.
In Chloe Kim’s first run, she threw down several insane tricks, logging an 88 from the judges. That score stood up for most of the competition until Korean Gaon Choi received a 90.25 on her third run. Choi took a hard fall in her first run and organizers thought she was going to withdraw before ultimately getting the top score.
Choi’s 90.25 put the pressure solely on Kim’s shoulders. In her third run, she was flying high until on one of the last tricks, she fell. Her first run score of 88 got her the silver medal.
Japan’s Mitsuki Ono took home the bronze medal, scoring an 85 on her first run.
The snow was dumping at the Livigno Snow Park on Thursday, causing problems for several snowboarders. Five of the 12 boarders, including Americans Maddie Mastro and Bea Kim, crashed during their first run. One commentator said, “It seems like all these riders are rattled at the potential of what Chloe Kim could bring so they are being forced to throw down.”
American Maddie Mastro struggled in the finals, falling on the same trick on all three of her runs.
Bea Kim fell on her first run but finished her second, logging a score of 77. She fell again on her third run, which eliminated her from medal contention.
During qualifying on Wednesday, Mastro scored an 86, which put her in third place, while Chloe Kim dominated the competition, logging a 90.25.
Wednesday’s qualifiers were the first time Kim had snowboarded in four weeks due to a shoulder injury that briefly had her spot in Milan in question.
Kim posted an update to Instagram Jan. 13 to say she had torn her labrum — the lining of the socket that holds the shoulder together — but wasn’t surprised by the news. She did not say which shoulder she injured when she fell.
“I might be better at snowboarding than I am at walking. I’ve been doing this for 22 years, said Kim, who is 25. “Muscle memory is a thing.”
The halfpipe is the only event on the Olympic schedule for Kim.
What is the snowboard halfpipe?
The snowboard halfpipe is a high-flying Winter Olympics event where athletes perform tricks while riding back and forth in a 22-foot tall U-shaped tube.
Riders are judged on amplitude, difficulty and variety of tricks with most participants landing five to six tricks per run.
