Gov. Brian Kemp announced new express lanes in Henry County.
MCDONOUGH, Ga. — Gridlock-weary motorists in Henry County mostly welcomed an announcement Wednesday that the state would add new express lanes to I-75.
Gov. Brian Kemp announced the highway expansion project Wednesday. Shakyra Robertson said she has spent more than her share of time moving ever so slowly through Henry County on I-75.
“I hate it,” she laughed Wednesday. “It’s just – you’re sitting most of the time.”
This, in spite of express lanes the state built a decade ago. The reversible lanes only go in one direction at a time.
“75 going southbound?” sighed Cecil Bailey, a Henry County resident. “Forty-five, 50 minutes to go three or four exits maybe. Especially with tractor trailers.”
The state announced a proposed fix for the gridlock south of Atlanta – new express lanes going in both directions, according to Gov. Brian Kemp.
“Our initial estimates indicate that once these express lanes are completed, as much as 70% more vehicles will be able to pass through that corridor during the rush hours,” Kemp told the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Wednesday.
“How many express lanes are they going to build?” Rasuan Williams asked skeptically outside a QuikTrip in McDonough. “Like 20, 30?”
Details on the project are still pending.
“It needs like four, five, six lanes,” Williams added. “And then an underground tunnel.”
Motorists on the southside have grown accustomed to the growing gridlock, and know the state’s new upgrade is still years down the road.
