Days before her diagnosis anniversary, Lexie, 14, is back in the ICU. As her parents halt their small business, East Texans rally so the family can focus on hope.

TYLER, Texas — Every New Year brings a reminder for one East Texas family, one that is far more personal and painful.

11 years ago Wednesday, Alexus “Lexie” Neptune, now 14, was diagnosed with craniopharyngioma, a rare type of brain tumor. Since the age of three, Lexie has faced a series of surgeries, repeated trips to the emergency room, and ongoing medical challenges.

“It’s a cystic tumor that attaches to your pituitary gland, and she has been fighting that since 2014,” her father, Aaron Neptune said, “If he gets sick, stuff can go really wrong.”

Over the weekend, just days before the anniversary of her original diagnosis, Lexie’s condition struck again.

“We went to wake her up, she wouldn’t wake up. She wouldn’t respond to anything,” Aaron said. “We called 911, and they sent an ambulance to pick us up and took us to the local ER, where they almost immediately set up Life Flight to get her to Dallas.”

Lexie is currently in the ICU, Aaron said machines are regulating her body temperature and blood pressure as she fights for her life

Aaron and his wife, Sarah, operate TheModern Texan, a furniture restoration business run out of their Tyler home. With Lexie’s health at a standstill, their business and income have also been affected.

“I just want her to be OK. That’s where our focus is right now, making sure that she can come back home,” he said. “I would rather bring home my healthy child than not have a home.”

The East Texas community has stepped up to support the Neptune family, helping cover expenses so they can focus on Lexie.

“We’ve been blessed with the most amazing individuals as clients, as friends, as followers on social media, and they just kind of picked it up and ran with it,” Aaron said.

Nicknamed “Giggles,” Lexie is described by her parents as the light of their lives, even in their darkest moments. Aaron said his hope now is that Lexie can continue to fight.

“I’m just hoping that they can keep her alive long enough to let her fight out of it,” he said.

For the Neptune family, the day  is not about looking back, but about holding on and believing that Lexie still has more fight left to give.
