The agency says glitter, sequins and oversized clothing may set off scanners and delay travelers at security checkpoints.
WASHINGTON — Thinking about rocking your sparkliest holiday sweater to the airport? The Transportation Security Administration has a gentle warning.
In a Dec. 19 post, the TSA reminded travelers that body scanners “don’t love sparkles,” cautioning that flashy holiday sweaters can slow things down at airport checkpoints.
“We don’t want to dull your holiday shine,” the agency wrote, “but we don’t recommend wearing your sparkly holiday sweater to the airport.”
Beyond sequins and glitter, travelers should also be aware that certain sweaters and jackets may need to come off during screening. According to TSA guidelines, anyone wearing a “light outer garment” or bulky clothing when passing through Advanced Imaging Technology scanners will be asked to remove it.
Light outer garments include items with a full front zipper or buttons, such as windbreakers, vests, blazers, sport coats and light jackets. Bulky clothing refers to loose or oversized items that don’t closely follow the body’s shape, including large sweaters, oversized hoodies, cardigans and ponchos.
If a traveler determines they can’t or don’t want to remove an item, they can let an officer know, although additional screening may be required.
For a full breakdown of what’s allowed, what may need to be removed and how screening works, travelers can check the TSA’s official guidance at tsa.gov before heading to the airport.
