ATLANTA — A record number of Americans are expected to hit the roads and skies this holiday season, according to new projections from AAA.
The travel organization forecasts about 122.4 million people will journey 50 miles or more from home between Saturday and Jan. 4, a 2% increase from last year.
About 90% of those travelers will drive, thanks in part to lower gas prices hovering below $3 a gallon.
Still, airports are bracing for large crowds. Expedia spokesperson Melanie Fish said the busiest day for air travel is expected to be the Saturday before Christmas, followed by Dec. 26, the day after Christmas.
At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, officials are preparing for their busiest holiday season since the pandemic. Nearly 5.3 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport during the travel period, with Dec. 26 projected as the peak day.
Drivers could also face packed highways that day.
But for those hoping to avoid holiday congestion, traffic experts say Christmas Eve and Christmas Day may be the best times to hit the road.
