It all comes down to a marketing change.
WASHINGTON — HBO unveiled the first trailer for its highly anticipated “Harry Potter” television series on Wednesday.
“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” will usher in a new era for Hogwarts, with a whole new cast. Many fans may be wondering why the first season of the upcoming series doesn’t match the title for the original book and movie.
Why is the name for the new ‘Harry Potter’ series different?
It all comes down to a marketing change made in the late ’90s.
In J.K. Rowling’s biography, written by Phillip W. Errington, it’s noted that there were about 80 word changes made by Arthur A. Levine, a publisher and editor at Scholastic known for bringing the book series to the United States.
Levine suggested the title change, saying the title needed to say “magic” more overtly to American readers.
In another biography, written by author Melissa Anelli and published in 2011, it’s noted that Levine pushed for the name change from “Philosopher’s Stone,” which is the original publishing name in the U.K.
“If you think about marketing a book,” he said. “It is possible that someone hears ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ and thinks it’s a book about philosophy.”
Levine suggested pushing the name to have “magic” in the title, and even suggested Harry Potter and the School of Magic, which eventually became the French title for the book. Rowling came up with the new title for the “Sorcerer’s Stone.”
When does the new ‘Harry Potter’ series come out?
Along with the new trailer, HBO finally confirmed when fans of Hogwarts can expect the new series on their screens.
“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” premieres on Christmas Day.
Warner Bros. Discovery also shared the show’s synopsis.
“There is nothing special about Harry Potter – at least that’s what his Aunt Petunia always says. On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship and magic. But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past,” the logline, shared in a news release, read.
The TV series will be a new adaptation of the original novels, and Rowling will serve as an executive producer on the show.
HBO describes the series as a “faithful” adaptation of the books, with each season bringing Harry Potter to new and existing audiences.
